Anole won't eat

Y0KK3N Apr 30, 2004 04:01 PM

Hello, this is my first post on the Kingsnake forums.

I recently bought an anole from my science teacher after we did a lab on them. I'm not sure if this is the cause of my problem. I bought my new green anole the entire works: cage, fake log, etc. etc. I bought him pinhead crickets, and some dead, canned crickets, just in case. My anole was fine the day I brought him home, but now in his new home, where I'm positive everything's fine, he's brown 24/7. I haven't seen him any other color for 3 days. I accidentally put about 6 crickets in his tank after trying to get an egg carton out of the cricket cage. I put 2 dead ones in there too, in case he might want them. He won't eat either, and I haven't seen him drink any water. I hope he's not sick. I don't think taking him to a herp vet will do much good if he has no feces to give to examine. I hope he's not sick. I really want to try and raise an anole; I've always wanted a pet of my own, and I don't want him to die. Can anyone please help me? I don't want him to die. Thanks.

-James

When I said feces, I meant a fecal exam. Sorry.

James-

You said you've only had him for three days? It might take him a little while to settle in - moving like that can be stressful. Anoles are cute, but pretty panicky. He's likely still freaked out.

In the meantime, check out the link below and read everything there - make sure you have everything your new buddy needs. He'll probably come around on his own. If not, let us know, and take him to a vet if you have to.

Good luck!

Yeah, I read almost that entire site. I tried to keep a low budget, since I'm only 13 with an allowance and no job. =/

anoles adore/love meal worms.

I'm not sure I would worry just yet. I agree with El Toro. It could need some time to settle down. If I so much as move one thing in my tank, my brown Anole will come out of the log take one look around and say, nope! Then it won't come out for a day or two.

Some days it won't look cross eyed at a cricket and other days it will dart across the tank to get one in an instant. I have had mine 6 months and I've only seen it drink 3 times.

If this goes on, you could always try a small piece of waxworm on a tweezer. Touch it lightly against the end of his mouth (if he'll let you), that's how I got mine to start eating at the beginning.

Keep us posted.
Andy

Alright. Thanks for posting. I'll try and keep you guys posted.

I only saw him out for about 2 hours yesterday, still brown, and I caught another cricket with my tweezers, but no luck. I touched it to his mouth and he wouldn't open up. I have a feeling that my anole is going to die. I never saw my science teacher mist the tanks or feed them. -_-

And furthermore, to keep you updated...:

He came out of his log around 11:00 AM today, which shocked me. He's sitting right below his light and I turned on my lava lamp, which happens to be right next to his tank, for extra heat. I'm not sure if it's because he's not warm enough or what that he's not eating. I'm gonna try a few different things. Over and out.

I'm extremely sorry for triple posting, but...:

I came home after going out for a bit and my anole was sitting on his log, and there was an odd glob of something in the tank. It had a white tip, then a little red, then a bigger glob of white-ish stuff. Does anyone know what this is?

ajr May 02, 2004 08:28 PM

Was it small? Kind of as big around as a mouse dropping but longer?

Y0KK3N May 03, 2004 06:38 AM

I'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about... yeah. It was about a centimeter long. =/

AJR May 03, 2004 10:04 AM

I just don't think there should be red in it. I think it should be white and black. My Anole was a rescue that hadn't eaten in almost a month due to being packed in a moving box accidentally and at the beginning, the droppings were white/a bit of orange/black. That stopped a long time ago and now it is always black/white.

I think you will have a better chance of it eating a small piece of wax worm held to the mouth than a cricket. Be patient when you do this. It will most likely taste it a bit before taking it. The taste of these is almost irresistable to anoles.

Thanks. As I said, it just had a tiny tip of red at the end of it. My science teacher fed them, I asked him today. I'll see what I can do about the waxworms and mealworms. Thanks again!

have you been trying water twice a day? maybe an exo terra waterfall or something would do well. Even though you said you were on a tight budget. Maybe you get tour mom or dad to help you out.

Y0KK3N May 03, 2004 04:18 PM

Nope, my parents wouldn't help me, I already asked. I'm already like $20.00 in debt. I mist him 3-4 times a day really good, so I don't see what the problem would be. =/
