My Central American Boa is in dire medical need

jwhdrum Apr 30, 2004 05:39 PM

Fluffy, my 7 foot Central American Boa, has recently been feeding extremely well on live rats. I put her in the feeding enclosure with a large rat, expecting that she would eat it like usual. This was simply not so. I left right after I put them together to do some other things, and a few hours later I returned to find she had eaten the rat, but the rat had munched on her...alot. A "hole" about one inch long and 1/2 inch wide, 1/4 - 1/2 inch deep was eaten out of her about 1/2 way down her body. Muscle and tissue is exposed. Also two other small munch marks, not as deep, were inflicted. I have access to all medical antibiotics and bandages that any vet does, but have no money to see a vet. I need someone to tell me what I should do. What antibiotics to administer, and how much. Please help.
Thanks everybody.

Rinse with peroxide, apply a triple anti biotic, start feeding frozen. Good luck and hopefully someone else has some input, but the above does work, unfortunatly I know from experience.

"your best taking it to someone like a Vet"

I would go ahead and see if a local vet will see her with the promise of future payment. I dont know if that will work but it is worth a shot.

No doubt your boa is in a lot of pain. You will need to see a vet to see what pain medication is needed and what kind of dosing would be best. The vet will also give you a topical medication for the wounds, and possibly advice on how to apply the medication without causing further damage or unnecessary pain.

No doubt, this is a prime example of why everyone should only feed frozen/thawed rodents. Not to point the finger, but this is not the rats fault...
