Texas Drift Fences

thekidgecko Apr 30, 2004 06:29 PM

Hi,
I was wondering if drift fences were legal in Texas. If so would they catch my target species of whiptails, uta and urosaurous, collards, TX banded geckos(REALLY want to catch these), skinks, collards, frogs, and small snakes? I want to try it down in outskirts of odessa/midland area. Should I wait till the day afer (or night of) a rain so that more herps will be out? Any help is appreciated = ) Thanks!

I don't think so. TX considers herps "nongame species," and a hunting license is required to capture any herp. Methods of take are specified, and I don't think the use of drift fences is one of them.

Based on where you said you'd be hunting, I don't think a drift fence would be necessary anyway!

I think that it would be lawful because i just found this : Trapping may be used for nongame animals on private property: on tpwd. by the way i would be asking to hunt/trap on ranchers land or back of a shop. You are right about how good the herping is there but I swear the whiptails run 5mph faster than anywhere else! I guess that means there good and healthy though! =)

If you are good with a cast net, they make catching Cnemi's much easier.

You mean the kind you catch bait fish like shad and bream in? I happened to be pretty good with those. I otta give that a try!

The one and same. I use them mostly for saltwater, but I had one that I was using to try and catch Cnemis. I almost had two, but the edges caught on a brush pile and the lizards got out from underneath it. Haha...I can just picture a game warden coming up and trying to bust you for not having a fishing license with you. Take it easy and good luck.
