Smelly cage!

smith710 Apr 30, 2004 08:36 PM

Is there any way to get rid of the bad odor in a gecko cage??? I just cleaned my gecko cage and put new sand and cleaned it and everything. Once the geckos go to the bathroom just a couple of times no matter how fast i get it out of the cage it still smells bad and it wont go away! I keep the top closed as good as i can so that the heat will stay trapped in the cage so I dont want to keep the top very ventilated. Is there any other way that i can make the cage not smell so bad that wont hurt the geckos?
Thank You Very Much

I dont think it is their wastes that stink. I think all geckos put out the same smell, but it just smells bad to you. I've gotten used to it.

Get rid of the sand. Fears of impaction aside, the sand absorbs all the wastes and the smells, so it comes back. If you use something like Paper towels, it'll be WAY easier to clean anyhow.

Other than that, Clorox has Air Disinfectant now that works pretty well...

Im doubting that it will get impacted... As long as he isnt feeding them in the cage (besides mealworms and other worms in bowl) the chance of impaction is scarce. The only way it could get impacted is if it eats it.

And i think if you get a empty butter container (the small ones not the huge one) and scoop it out deep enough all the the with the absorbed waste wont be there any more.

Is the feces solid? Runny? When my geckos have gotten sickly their wastes smelled real bad because of the parasites in the stool.

I was using just perlite in my nest boxes for quite some time...and ive been noticing that my geckos eat it, and deficate it. I dont doubt they'd nibble on the sand as well. Better safe than sorry. I am now going to start using vermiculite, to solve this problem so nothing bad happens.

Just wanted to clear that up. Try something like slate tiles..easier to clean, and they look nice too. And you can buy them cheap at Home Depot in squares.

My gecko does not eat it. and i think it is easy to clean up, and it looks alot nicer than paper towels and carpet. I dunno about tiles though, wouldnt they heat up to much with an U.T.H? With sand you can control the heat.

tiles are my personal favorite substrate...they hold and disperse heat...with a UTH you should be using a rheostat or thermostat to begin with, so no, they shouldn't get too hot.

What is a rheostat or the other thing you mentioned?

a rheostat is basically a dimmer swith, which allows you to adjust how much heat the UTH gives off. A thermostat is a dimmer switch that controls itself...there is a temp probe that you put in the tank where you want to keep the temp constant, and the thermostat regulates the heat the UTH gives off to keep that temp constant.

and I'm not sure how to install them...but I think you probably just plug it into the wall and then plug the heater into it.

the thermostat. So i guess sand is my only option. Unless she starts eating it then i would order it off the internet some where.

They arent very big pet stores, the one i dont go into any more because they had a bearded dragon with a tortios in it, and the cage was i think a 5 1/2. My favorite one is mainly fish. The pet city doesnt. And the other one is mainly fish and dogs.

there's also a scarce possibility that a leo could tear a piece of paper towel off a corner and get impacted on that...that doesn't mean you should stop using paper towel all together. Sand isn't right for everyone...but that doesn't mean no one should use it.

If you have a glass aquarium as thier tank, you should have a screen top. If you have a lid that doesn't allow ventilation, then that's why the tank smells so bad, and its bad for the leos as well.
