Smelly Cage!

smith710 Apr 30, 2004 08:40 PM

Is there any way to keep a boa cage from getting smelly or to get the smell out? I clean the cage regularly, I have repti bark in it right now. But once they go to the bathroom a couple times the cage starts to smell again. Is there any way to make the cage not smell so bad without hurting the snakes? Oh I have the top pretty covered so it keeps the heat in the cage too and I don't want to change that because it's easier to keep the cage warm.
Thank You

I don’t know. Maybe a thin layer of aquarium charcoal under the repti-bark might help absorb the odors. Is there any fresh air exchange, or is the top really closed off good.

If your cage still stinks after cleaning it, then you are not cleaning it well enough. A strong smell is a sign of bacteria still lingering in the substrate. This is not good for your boa, or for you for that matter because it could be salmonella.

I completely change my substrate once a month, like clockwork. Sounds like you should too...
