He just shed about five days ago, so I don't think that is the case... this is the color he is. If you want to see a good picture of him, I'm pretty sure he's the same one on Kerby's "Snakes of Arizona" page.... just go to Lonesome Valley reptiles and "snakes of arizona"...etc. I think age has a lot to do with the color variations. She's an '01, he's her father, and I don't know when Kerby found him. So he's quite a bit older than she is. The darker crossovers make him appear very dark, but sometimes when I see just the first few triads of the snake, I don't know which one is which. She's a very beautiful girl though, and I'm hoping to get more like her! We'll see. Also keep in mind that both snakes are actually IN WATER so that probably affects the color, not to mention the yellow glare of the water dish probably also having an effect on the reds in the photo.

>>Nice pic illustrating the variation in colors possible on pyros. But i'm wondering if the darker one might be in shed? I wonder because if you look about two or three triads behind its head, it's lined up with the lighter one's body, and the reds (oranges?) on the two snakes look almost identical at that point on the body. Maybe it's just the crossovers, as you noted, that make the one look so much darker. But there seemed to be a red/orange difference, and it isn't apparent at the point in the picture described above.
