Horizontally or Vertically-Oriented Panther Cage?

KenW May 01, 2004 10:11 AM

I'm planning to order a new all-screen cage for my 8 month old male panther chameleon. He is outgrowing his current cage. I expect the new cage I buy will be the cage he will live in the rest of his life.

There are two cage sizes I am considering. One is slightly more horizontally-oriented and the other is more vertically-oriented. The first measures 36"Hx24"Lx24"W and the other is 36"Hx30"Lx18"W.

I understand that many panther owners use four foot tall cages but that wouldn't work for me because the combined table height and cage height would make it inconvenient to change the dripper's water each day.

Anyways, I'd appreciate any input or suggestions people would offer about these two cages. Thanks ahead of time.

Ken,
I would say go for the 24x24x36 inch cage simply to save space in the width. The actual mass of the cages is the same, but I like the 24 inch wide cages since they don't take up an entire table, or if you eventually get more of them, you can put them side by side with a 4' shoplight over the tops of them nicely. I prefer 36" cages to 48 inchers also for that reason, and because the lower height keeps the chameleons closer to the UVB bulbs a little more often. Either one is plenty big for an adult panther chameleon.
