Monroe Co, ILL Red Milks

Roundin3rd May 01, 2004 11:22 AM

I went scouting in Monroe CO for herp sites mainly, not expecting to find much. The weather was rainy, temps in the upper 50's, low 60's, and overcast. After finding a few DOR's (one beautiful adult red milk, one rough green, one unidentified) I found this small dump site. Despite the rain, I couldn't help myself.

Here is one of the 2 milks found under a thin metal sheet that seemed to be tossed there recently. This was an "as is" pic, just after lifting the metal. The snake had a wound at the end of the tail but otherwise seemed healthy.

Here is a larger milk found about 4 feet away, again under metal sheeting. This one was a bit more faded. I have herped in and around St. Louis a bit, but have never crossed the river into Illinois before this. The light bandings are much more "white" on animals in MO.

One last shot of the smaller snake from above. He wasn't too happy with me, as seen by the tail vibration.

Other than these animals, a very large and very pretty copperhead was found under a half buried piece of wood deeper back in the wooded area. Sorry, no pic of that one. Hope you enjoyed these. I'll return later in the year to try to see if I can find these 2 again and see if there is some baby production going on.
