Changing the setup

antonm Jun 15, 2003 09:30 PM

About every 2 weeks when I clean my gecko's cage, I change the arrangement of the bark and plants I got in his cage. Being a tokay gecko I dont think he minds the cleaning much since he doesnt seem very stressed out at all, but I dont know if he really likes a different atmosphere every 2 weeks. Anyone got any input on this? Do they usually prefer to establish territory and keep it or is it better to variate so they dont feel so bored? This is a 20 gallon tall tank by the way if that makes any difference....

Hello Antonm:
I would try to keep the tank with a very similar layout each time you clean. In the wild their habitat changes little except for the occasional fallen tree or crumbling wall. I think they fare better and have less stress in familiar surroundings.
The only time I would change the position of cage furniture is if a new animal is added to the terrarium. In this case the longtime habitat dweller has territorial advantage and can be quite aggressive towards any new tankmate. By changing things around a bit it gives both animals equal opportunity to set up their own territories.
Hope this info helps. Good Luck!!!
