Virgin birth

We have had an albino rat snake for the past 5 years or so, and she has never been in contact with a male snake. Over the last week, she has layed 8 eggs, with more on the way. Is it possible? We have read about parthenogenisis, or pregnancy without the need of a male.

If you are familiar with this topic, we would appreciate some information or response. We are attempting to incubate the eggs, to see if they are in fact fertile.

I'd be willing to wager they're infertile, but no harm in incubating them. Lots of snakes lay infertile eggs when not with a male. As for pathenogenesis in snakes, it is the norm to my knowledge only in some blind snakes, but has been "documented" as a rare event in a few others including rattlesnakes. I am personally unconvinced. Interesting topic though.

Oph. Farms, you would have won your bet! Knotts had 10 eggs in a four day period. All perished as they were infertile. Knotts now back in fine form.
Thanks for your response,

John (Knotts' caretaker)
