Are there any care sheets on Trans Pecos Rat snakes online? Are these easy snakes to care for? Is there any difficulties with them.
Thanks,
Dan

VPI.com has a good caresheet for them. As far as problems, I think humidity is the key issue. If the humidity is too high, the snakes won't thrive. I've heard of some people having difficulty getting them to start feeding, but I have never had this problem (except for once when the humidity was too high!!!). Good luck!
I haven't experienced any difficulties in spite of the fact most of mine are wild collected. Standard colubrid hubandry seems to apply. One notable difference is that they breed much later than other colubrids (July-August).Definately one of my favorite species.
All the best,
Perry
What's the formula for successful suboc breeding? For example, since they breed late in the summer, do you still cool the snakes at the same time you would other colubrids? Or do you cool them at all?
Sorry I didn't reply sooner. I haven't been stopping by much lately.
All the best,
Perry
I've done a bit of herping in west Texas and picked up a couple subocs. One was a bit over 4 feet, and another just under 3. The smaller one started on mice and took f/t soon afteward. The larger one would not feed for a long while until I figured out that he liked birds. Eventually he took mice and small rats as well.
I love the species. They are very calm and docile. I hear that captive bred do very well from day one. There are normals, blondes, axanthics, and albinos bred every year. Here's a link to a breeder in PA.
