Largest Blotched Kingsnake EVER? - 6' 2" long & almost 5 pounds (before eating)!!!

BlueKing May 01, 2004 05:33 PM

THIS IS A TRUE MONSTER!!! He dwarfs my 5'8" Brooksi (Crusher)! Picked this guy up today at the carolina reptile show. Never thought a blotched Kingsnake would get this big. Shortly after taking some cheap pics and weighing, he slammed down 2 large mice in an Indigo Snake fashion - ate them as if they were fuzzies!!! WOULD LOVE TO BREED this guy (keep the "large" gene pool going) But my biggest available female is only 4.5'. Will see what happens. . . Sorry about the bad pic (took it with a 29 dollar webcam), but I still havn't replaced my broke digi cam yet. NOW I have a good reason to replace it! As soon as I do I will post some REAL pics of this TRUE MONSTER!!! Just wanted to share. . . .
Has anyone seen a blotched Kingsnake over 74" yet? If not, this could be the biggest???

Thanks,

Zee

Now that's a robust looking snake! Any idea about it's age? Sure is a keeper.

Here is a picture of me measuring the giant blotched King. The ruler on the right is a wooden 2 footer. The ruler on the left is a metal 3 footer. I measured a 1 foot gap between the two rulers to make the total distance equal exactly 6 foot prior to placing the relaxed animal next to them. Zoom in and you can see for yourself that the snake was NOT stretched at all to gain extra length - there are numerous small kinks/waves in his body. I only straightened him out next to the rulers so you can see I am not lying about his size. I don't stretch snakes to make them longer, this would most certainly cause numerous spinal injuries. I WILL USE SERPWIDGETS to ensure that I can get a "computerized" accurate measuremnt as soon as I get a digi cam. The 74" measuremnt does not compensate for his kinks in his body, so chances are that he may actually be an inch longer or so.
Some other VERY accurate measurements: Head length: 1.50", head width: 1.00". Tail length: 8.65". Diameter after NOT eating for a week or more: 1.85", Girth: 5.25". The wooden ruler is 1.75" wide (for width/girth comparison).
This is about the best I can do for now. I was just so amazed when I saw this animal - NEVER in my 32 years of herping have I seen a live Kingsnake this big. I really wasn't prepared to buy this animal, but I just had to in hopes of passing this "Giant gene" on to other animals in the future since I LOVE GIANT EASTERNS and BROOKSI and EVERYTHING in between ie. Apalachicolas, goinis, suwanees etc.
HOPE THIS HELPS ALL THE NONBELIEVERS (I do understand there ARE a lot of dishonest folks out there - I AM NOT ONE OF THEM!!!) until I do the serpwidgets thing OR better yet stop by my house IN PERSON!!!!!!!
Thanks for reading/believing. . .

very nice lookin king congrats he is a monster, dont worry i beleive he's 6 ft..,ive been ragged on here about cleo(my 14yr old e.king) not being 6ft ,doesnt mean anything, i and several other folks who have seen and held him in person know he is 6 ft.the serpwidgets thing is *cute* but really its just for those folks that like to dispute sizes and its not even accurate?,i would also like to say that i will be displaying cleo at the eths expo in sept.'04 if anyone wants to get chance to meet him

Beautiful Snake Thomas!!! I have looked at pics of your monster many times in the past and I AM convinced he's every bit 6 foot. Does he still breed??? Do you have a large enough female to breed it with??? How big was he when YOU got him? where is HE from? Which show/s will you be at in Sept? Would love to meet "Cleo" if I am near your area!

Thanks for sharing - LOVE those monster Kings!!!

thanks ,,, im gonna get some current pics of cleo and my s.c. female up soon,,he is 14yrs old this year he was produced in 1990 from w/c parents from ocean co. n.j and yes he still does breed, bred him last year to s.c female who laid 11 eggs only 4 were good though and of that only 2 survived(both are doing great now and growing like weeds),,,but she was a new w/c and a lil skinny and only at 48 inches., this year i bred cleo w/her again now she is well over 55inches and fat still a dwarf next to cleo though!, she has good body weight and i expect a nice clutch in about 2weeks . we will be at the E.T.H.S. expo in sept.'04(houston,tx.),,its also my opinion that its
NOT a giant gene i beleive easterns just like apps, goini's fla's etc. just get big w/age,and some are bigger than others just like in ALL creatures, some are just bigger.i beleive any pure eastern,fla.,goini,app.king etc can & will attain a length of 6 feet if cared for properly their entire life ,
peace

Thomas I also believe that your Cleo is every bit as big/long as you say he is. I don't know why people are ragging on you about it, it's very obvious to me just from the couple of photos you've posted that he is one frikkin HUGE kingsnake. I think they're all just jealous

Zee, that is also an incredible looking snake, well done! I have been thinking about getting a breeding pair/trio of Apalachicola or Goini lately, please let me know if/when you plan on breeding him, thanks.

My 3 favourite snakes on here so far are Cleo, Cyclops and now this monster, although I think they're all beautiful

Hi there, Snake Charmer, Thanks for the compliments. I didn't expect to find such a nice animal at the carolina reptile show since it is one of the smaller shows in the country. (Thank god for my son's burning desire to want a corn snake mate for his pet - otherwise I wouldn't have went!) I will be tryig to breed "him" (still thinking of a good name for him) with a suitable mate as soon as possible. Would like to find a female with a similar pattern if I could. Considering his size/age he does have pretty clean looking bands with speckling of brown (within the lighter bands) occuring mostly on his back half of his body. IF ONLY I CAN GET A FEMALE . . . . . . !!!

I hope you don't mind me taking the liberty of running Serpwidgets on your snake.

I ran it several times from both pics and got values that were around the same within the 70.5 to 74" range. It appears there is another inch or so of tail under the body, so that would put the snake at about 6 feet 2, as you measured.

No matter what the exact length is,

a. it is a big one!
b. it is gorgeous. These snakes used to be sold as "wide-banded" or blotched intergrades. I much prefer these wide banded snakes to the patternless or striped "true" goini.

Thanks a lot! I do appreciate the help! Speaking of the tail of the snake: It is complete all the way to the "infant tip". I was told by the seller that he got this snake from Mark Bell some time ago and just ran out of room for him. I also believe this animal to be captive born since it is completely scarless and pretty thick uniformly with almost a "pin head like appearance" (always well fed I guess). I do know this snake has had a wonderful happy life as his huge size is probably the best indicator. Like you Chris, I DO prefer the wide banded variety versus the striped or spotted versions. Sure hope I can find a large (blotched) female for him soon! In the meantime I will try to contact Mark on Monday and maybe get a little history and possible age on this guy. . .
Once again thanks for the help Chris!
