weird timor behaviour

dynomite May 01, 2004 07:42 PM

i dont know how unusual this is as he is my first and only monitor, you guys say that they are usually unseen and usually he is not exception, some days he does not come out of his burrow and usually he is not out for more than a few hours, maybe 5 tops, however, sometimes, and this is one of those, he won't go back to his burrow. he has been on the screen top of his cage for about two days now, he will come down during the day, eat, bask, drink, run, etc but then climb back up to the top, yesterday he even defecated while upside down (thank gd he cleaned it himself today cuz i didnt want to disturb him) so y question is, should i be concerned that he is spending so much time out of his burrow? he has become increasingly more and more trusting of me where before i couldnt even be in the same room when he was out of his burrow and he actually took 2 or 3 crickets from my hand a few days ago, so could it be that he is simply trusting enough to stay out? the mesh is where the basking light is, the rest of the tank is covered to trap moisture, i dont think its for warmth though cuz he is rarely if ever under the light, he is usually off to the side, could it be that he is enjoying the breeze? the temps r fine btw too, i hope i gave you guys enough background info, thanx for your response

What arev your temps?(basking/ambient/cool side) how large is your enclosure?, How deep is your substrate? Its hard to offer an intelligent diagnosis without all of the above information. Also mesh screened tops affect your husbandry in a negative way. They won't allow your enclosure to hold any amount of humidity. I'd suggest a plexiglass/acrylic/or wooden top with vents but if your enclosure allows the vents wood be better placed on the sides(as opposed to the top) for air circulation and to maintain stable humidity levels.

Well, pooping on theirselves is something I've never seen my Timor's do, but otherwise if your monitor is active and eating well, it doesn't seem like there is anyting to worry about. What are the dimensions of your cage? What is the temp at the basking site and at the cool end of your cage?
