I told my mom tonight about my new snake...and she freaked out...shes like "its bad enough you have that lizard...but a snake is going to eat my grandkids"...and she was serious....what is wrong w/ people??? she also called me nuts...anyone else have people treat you this way??? share some stories w/ me to make me feel better please....Thanks all.

When I had my turtle my dad told me I should flush him down the toilet!!! Then he just laughed at me when I got the geckos. My roommates are loved the turtle.....but they're kind of afraid of the geckos...lol and they would KILL me if I got a snake...as would my parents...lol

-ignorance is not to be punished when one is trying to gain knowledge...what scares me is the vast number of people who, when given the information to gain knowledge, choose to ignore it.

Yeah my mom is the same way. She just doesnt understand. If my dog was sick she would take it to the vet. But if my leo was sick she'd be like, it'll get better. Or this is her favorite, They dont have whatever in the wild.

She also ask me why i dont feed my leo in her cage because of the sand. and i told her i didnt want it to get impacted and all she had to say was so what if it cant poop for a while, you baby your gecko to much. it just pisses me off.

My Dad thinks the leo's are cool but...my mom just doesn't feal the same why I do. If I lived in my own house, I would freakin have like 50 of then! But my mom just told me tonight that I can only have 3 to breed and sell the babies I have

Yah I think there are more people with herpaphobs than without. Sadly I believe we are all a minority group, LOL. It's only because they do not have much experience with with reptiles. In fact I would say I kinda was once in this life time, untill I got my first buddy Rex. I was in a pet store looking for fish for my new tank. For some reason I ended up in the reptile section. As soon as they brought Rex out, I was hooked. He was such a bad boy, crawled all over me untill he found a compfy spot on my boob, LOL. I miss the little guy .

My mom has a serious herpaphob, never once even touched Rex in four years. However when she saw my new babies she feel in love. "Oh their so tiny, oh their so cute..." it was hilarious. She doesn't even think most pupies are cute.

haha...first off..my mom is asian...so i have to thank God that first of all...altho shes a herpaphob...she supports the idea that i have a hobby other than BB guns *actually there was that phase* and computer games...but secondly...i thank God that she allowed me to keep all my herps...even proposed to get me another one cuz she saw an albino that was "perty"...and also i have a hognose...and altho shes freaked out by it...as an asian...she hasn't thought about eating it...or i hope not ...but my dad is another story...being a doctor...hes always..."HAVE U HEARD OF SALMONELLA...THEY ARE TRANSMITTED BY HERPS AND OTHER ANIMALS...YOU WANT TO KILL URSELF...WHAT ARE U DOING WITH THAT PINKY MOUSE...THEY CARRY DISEASES...AHHH?!?!? MEALWORMS?...IN MY DAY PEOPLE PAY TO GET RID OF PEST BUGS...AND U ARE PAYING EVERY WEEK TO BUY THEM?!??! AHHH!!! SNAKE!! IT MUST BE POISONOUS *i can't really refute that ...i have a hog*.." u guys get the idea ....so u SURELY aren't the only one....my dads toned down since...now its more like..."WHERES THE LYSOL...U BETTER SPRAY IT ON THE CRICKET SO THERE AREN'T ANY DISEASES WHEN U TOUCH IT"...hahahahhaha...but he means it in a loving way of course

Well i guess i'm on of the lucky ones here, LOL
my E N T I R E family is into herps, the funny thing is..the girls in my family like the snakes more than any other herp...
my mom even baught a ball python!...XD my dad wants either a green anaconda or an albino burmese python..my herps are taking over the family...we're spending kore on the reptiles than we do on ourselves, LOL, both my sisters have leos..17 of my cousins have either monitors,iguanas,ball pythons,fat tail geckos and more.

my mom is deeply IN LOVE with my albino male leo Harley,he's the sweetest gecko i have ever owned but she scares me sometimes LOL, everytime i have him out she takes him away from me and "baby talks" to him...>.> LOL

LOLOLOL! Sooo lucky! I think my mum TOLERATES me and my hobbies, lol! The ONLY Leo she likes is RON! But then again, everyone loves Ron! Lol. I was like.. SHOCKED when she said she wanted one of the hatchlings as her own in her room... And when she even paid for an incubator package! Maybe she's starting to get "Gecko-Fever"?? PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!! Lol!

I come from a family that doesn't really like reptiles. My dad doesn't say a word about them, but when my mom comes up to babysit for me she always says the animals (leos) are taking over the house. I had two bearded dragons a while ago and one happen to escape while we were on vacation and my mom was watching the kids. My grandmother said my mom was chasing the thing around the house with the tongs to try to get it back in it's cage...she finally did it without hurting it. lol...but my father in law can't stand reptiles and thinks we are crazy for having them, and my grandfather in law always ask why the geckos are trying to sell him insurance....lol

lol too funny.....People are always afraid of things they have limited info about....I dont think I've ever been afraid of reptiles though...I had friends in high school that had snakes and lizards....And an ex of mine had an iquana that about ended up adopting (he didnt take proper care of it) it passed away a week after we broke up ....However, I am deathly afraid of spiders LOL....BUT I dont kill all that come in my yard or anything....oh, and as far as babysitting my mom is actually about 5 hours away from me....But I'm sure I'll be asked to move Russia and Asia to a different room when she comes down@@....I used to have rats as pets and she was the same way about them....funny huh??? you would think she would LIKE snakes...I mean being she HATES rats and all??? lol

Maybe when your mom was growing up, she was taught to be afraid of snakes. When you mentioned she was serious about the snake eating her grand kids, that said to me that she doesn't now much about them to have a good understanding of them and probably thinks that every snake will grow up to be huge one's.

Take some time to explain to her about your specific snake, it's care and tell her what the maximum size is that it will get. Also, let her know that you lock down the lids with clamps.

I can't have one, because my family said that if I ever brought one home, then I would be out the door. But I understand, because they have a fear of snakes, and I respect that.

YEAH! I had my friend come over and she was all like.. "EW! OH MY GOD! AHH! HOW CAN YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT WITH THAT THING IN YOUR ROOM!?" -_-

I think it's actually SAD, because reptiles aren't just chopped liver.. They have feelings and they have as much personality as a dog or cat! I don't see what is so gross about them..? Nothing is wrong with them, they also can't help that they were born into this world as reptiles! I just think that Herpaphobs need to give reptiles a chance, even if you can't notice their emotions from the outside, I am sure they are smiling on the inside when they are loved and cared for! -Starts to cry- Now I need to go hug Ron! Lol, joking. But, the point is.. REPTILES ARE "PEOPLE" TOO!

lol ok im JEALOUS of tokay family.....I wish my family was so open....I should have known better though...these are the same people that would kill ANY snake just because it was in their yard @@.....oh well they will get over it...and I bet my son and his friends think his mom is freakin cool because she likes snakes and lizards LOL=D....anyhow, THANK YOU all for making me feel better...nice to know their are other people dealing w/ my problem....but oh well I love my little ones and thats all that matters=D.

have u guys noticed...but of all the hobbies, clubs etc....i think that the herp community is the closest and responsive...im also in a dog forum, martial arts forum, and tennis forum and none are that interconnected...its great to know all of yall!!

I guess i'm pretty lucky. My parents aren't huge fans of my geckos but they are interested....coming down every now and then to check up on them. When i brought home my first crested gecko my dad said he actually liked it better than Boo (male leo and the only one i had at the time). My mom isn't into snakes at all but other than that she's put up with everything i've ever brought home....hehe i was one of those kids out in the dirt or up a tree and forever bringing home new *pets*. Even at university students would call me to come rescue them from whatever was in their room...spiders, bees.

I'm not really afraid of anything but over the years i've become less fond of spiders....in the summer we get alot of them around the house and i react badly to spider bites so........

As for herps, i can pretty much bring in small things, geckos etc. but as for any large snakes i'm outta luck until i move out. With my family i did earn some browny points by bringing home the kittens...yes i said *kittens* got two now. My father is very happy with the 2nd one as she curls up in his arms and sleeps alot. Most of the critisim i get regarding my herps comes from outside, usually fellow employees at work. Only one girl was interested and comes over to see them. Everyone else thinks i'm nuts. They keep tellig me to get away from the lizards and find a man......LOL

The fact that they know so little is what makes them afraid and harsh about my keeping them. I educate as much as i can but ignorance is a hard thing to overcome sometimes. Regardless i'm happy with my herps and other pets. I'm not giving any of them up!
