Golden Pothos

crocker Jun 15, 2003 09:58 PM

Hi, I have a 1 year old red foot tortoise. I have seriously thought about putting a golden pothos plant in his cage. Before i put one in there i am doing some research and most of the sites say that it would be safe for him. I asked a good friend of mine who works at a pet shop, who also owns a red foot tortoise, and she said it would be fine if i put one in there since her tortoise has had one in its cage for a few years now. She said that it eats some of the leaves off of it and said that she hasnt ever seen any signs of illness from it.
well the main thing I wanted to know was if the golden pothos plant is safe for my red foot tortoise to have in his cage and munch off of.

thanks

Hi,

I also have a 1 year old Redfoot. I have had golden
pothos in his habitat since he was a hatchling and yes
they are safe. He has managed to eat his way through both
of them. I have to remove them once in a while to let
them grow back. I believe the only possible problem
with these is that they have the oxilates (? spelling)
which can bind calcium if too much is ingested. If your
little tortoise is well fed that should not be a problem.
Another great plant that they normally will not eat but
love to hind under and climb on is the fern.

Hope this helps

Pothos in general are safe. My dogs eat the vines off if I'm not careful, and they have not had any problems to date.
