Basilisk substrate

Tarentola May 01, 2004 09:52 PM

I am a proud owner of a 1&half year old female brown basilisk.I keep her in a 65g(soon upgraded to a 90g)planted cage.i use artifical turf as substrate but hate it,and was wondering about using pine shavings instead. Is this okay for my bassie?

I wouldn't use pine or cedar as substrate! If you want to use a wood based sudstrate I'd go with cypress bark or aspen shavings, I'm using fir bark for mine, (cause it's cheap in bulk and cypress is impossible to find in my area for some reason.)although some may disagree. Pine and cedar are toxic to reptiles. If I'm incorrect someone correct me!! Coconut, fir, cypress, or aspen are all ok for substrate's.
Watch the finer shavings and stuff tho, since some reptile's may ingest it, which is not good!!

Coconut bark is safe and easy to get, pine shavings are bad for reptiles. Astroturf is really the best way to keep the cage clean tho. All bark products tend to harbor mites.

Pine shaves are okay for reptiles if it doesn't have a strong scent. And i don't like bark mulch because it gave my python mites so I dont use it anymore.

My dragon jumps doen like 2-3 feet to the ground sometimes. I hade a rock under the heat light, but she would jump down and land on rock, so I took it out. I mix sand and peatmoss, soon I'll switch to sand and cypress mulch. Soft landing, good on humidity, and she can dig in it.
