Emerald with ticks and mites

dactylusfan May 02, 2004 01:28 AM

I just recieved a freshly imported Emerald tree boa. I've had it in quarantine for two weeks. In that time it has eaten once and has seemed to be doing fine. Tonight I noticed that it has a bunch of ticks and a few mights. I used provent-a-might to get rid of the mights, but what do I use to get rid of the ticks? There are a lot and they are to small to to pick off individualy. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you, Phil Patton

prevent a mite may or may not get rid of the mites...use another product like mite rx to rub the snake down...pyrethrins(sp)is the active ingredient that kills mites...also, if you provide a big water bowl...the snake doesnt want them either so sometimes they will soak underwater and kill them themselves...you can also try bathing in a tub. i do not know many other ways to kill ticks but im sure if you google search it there are more ideas if you cant pick them..they should be easier than mites. good luck

You might want to try black knight, I know it kills mites.... I think it might work on ticks too... Be sure to make sure to get ALL of the ticks and mites with it though, I would soak the snake for at least 30 minutes before spraying... Maybe use a towel for bedding to see if there are anymore.. That's what I did with my burm, it had mites as a baby, I bought black knight, it got rid of them until I changed beddings (which I will never leave newspaper and paper towels) BUT With paper towels the mites and ticks are black so they will show up on the white towel... But I would spray the cage with it, the snake with it... probably 3 times within a week (VERY Seperated dates of course)... This is what has worked for me twice with mites.... Black knight should work with ticks too... And be sure to check the head too!!!!! But GOOD LUCK... this crap is the most frustrating stuff in the world....

Best of luck,
-Ben

I talked to a friend of mine that's a biologist at University of Washington, and he told me to by a product that uses Dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate. So I found a product called Revenge Bug Strip, and placed a postage stamp sized piece in the cage, and by the next morning all the visible ticks and mites were dead. I'm sooo releaved!
Thank you, Phil
