leopard gecko has eye infection

QUEENBEE May 02, 2004 01:50 AM

my patternless got a eye infection today.i noticed it because he is keeping his left eye closed.he opened it to eat so i took my pen light and his eye is black and there is a slime or film covering it(the slime moves when he looks around).when i shined the light on that eye he closes it but not the right eye so i think the light is hurtng it.he is in the tank with 3 females and they are fine temps are good 90 (females are laying eggs).i wounder if this infection is catchy?i am sure there is nothing i can do at home for him so i am also asking looking for a good vet.i live in minnesota by st paul.all advice is helpfull,or stories if this has happened to you.also i need to find out what caused this to prevent it next time.i have 2 leo books but they say nothing about eye infections. thanks

You might wanna try some strerile saline solution for the eye, just in case there is something in it..maybe a peice of sand...are you using a silica based sand by any chance (ie: playground sand)?? The particles can be very sharp and scratch the lens of the eye.

i use paper towels for all my tanks.i do have long pieces of bark in there for hiding places.i've been flushing his eye out with water and tonight with the saline.the black slime on his eye is getting smaller,i think.he is still keeping his eye shut though.i'm going to keep trying and flushing his eye out.then maybe if still a problem i might have to make my 1st visit to a vet.even though i know there gonna rape me on the charges for a leo i paid 24.99 for.thanks for the advice.if they get something stuck in there eye would it make a black slime covering the eye?
