Would be grateful if someone could take a look at these pictures of our newly acquired skink and see what they think.
I don't know how to post photos on here but they are at

There is something seriously wrong with that skink's back! I would take it back to wherever you got it from and get your money back or if you want to keep it then get it to a vet!
Yikes! That looks like it may be a terrible case of MBD. Of course it could also be arthritis, or the result of trauma, or something else entirely. In any case -- not a healthy animal. Tiliquagirl is right. Bring it back to the seller and demand your money back. Do not encourage sales of unhealthy animals! If dealers think they can mistreat and improperly care for critters and still get paid for them, we all suffer. And the animals suffer the most.
If you insist on keeping it, please take it to a vet for xrays and bloodwork. If it is MBD it can be treated with proper care, but it can not be reversed and your skink will have a shorter lifespan.

The skink went back on Sunday. The shop were very nice about it and seemed extremely concerned. They said they will get a vet to check him in case he is any pain. They also asked me all kinds of questions about what it is and what causes it and how they can avoid it. Not brilliant, because as they're selling reptiles they should already know = but at least they care enough to learn now - better late than never!
On a happier note, I have hopefully found myself another skink and will be sure to check it out VERY carefully before I buy.
