NEED HELP TO KEEP HERPS ALIVE WHILE IM AWAY FOR VACATION!!!! PLEASE READ IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEA ABOUT THIS!!!!!

skankyskink May 02, 2004 08:45 AM

OK, im gonna be away for 3 weeks in the summer, in isreal, i really dont wanna go so i can stay with my herps, but m family forces me. ive got 2 schneiders that i need to keep alive, comftorbly.

Anyone who knows anything please answer me, i need to know if they could survive 3 weeks with only a couple dozen crickets if i put them in their habitat, and how to rig up a water dispenser that keeps flowing for quite a while (these are shneiders and require a large shallow bowl to drink from, plus they may tip over things. this is a big dilemma.

i dont have to many friends who are willing to take care of them, and of the ones who are, i do not trust them that much.

how long will they survive? and what should i do? please help

If you don't have anyone to trust to come to your house to care for your pets, how about sending your pets to someone else? Most reptile shops run a 'boarding house' for animals whose owners are on holiday.

If it is only 3 weeks, and we're talking about skinks this is what I suggest:
1, get a more solid and sturdy water bowl - they're not that much - you could probably hit your folks up for the cash if you're strapped - but you're going on holiday, so this would probably mean that you could afford $10. If you can't afford it, put a pretty heavy stone in the bowl to weigh it down.

2, The Cricket idea is a good one - as well as that, I would suggest you also maybe leave some fruit in a feeding bowl with perhaps some water so the fruit doesn't go rancid on you. I'm not sure how smart your skinks are, but I would think the fruit would go before the crickets.

3, If you're worried about lighting and heat, Most people would suggest you get a timer ( if they're kept inside ).

Those are 3 things I would do if I didn't want to put them up for boarding - however - Choosing the petstore idea is a good one - Just make sure they don't sell them on you - I heard of it happening before - so maybe get a blue paint pen and mark under the feet - so atleast you know that they are yours.

Good luck mate - Hope I've been able to help you.

Luke.

oh yes, need to make sure it's a reputable shop that you know and trust!

My local one had a member of staff leave their hamster there to be looked after while he was on holiday. One of the snakes escaped overnight and ... well, you can guess the rest!!!!!
