same old newbie questions - please help

zag May 02, 2004 08:52 AM

I'm not a beginner to reptiles - just chameleons. I just purchased two 2 week old panthers at the show in Raleigh. They were probably too small to be selling, but I figured they had as good of a chance surving with me than with the vendor. I got the standard screen cage set up, but I feel like it's too big for them to catch their food. Plus the pinheads can fit through the screen. Does anyone have any suggestions for feeding them. Could I even go with larger crix? Does the same "no bigger than their head" rule apply to tiny babies? Should I keep them in a 10 gallon aquarium until they get bigger? I am misting and have all my lights good to go; I'm just worried about them because they seem so fragile right now. Anyway, thanks for any help and newbie advice you guys can give me.

This is unrelated, but what's with people selling 'pairs' from the same bloodline and telling people to breed them?

Hi-

You will want to house them in a smaller solid container like a plastic tub with a screen top for the first month or two. You may also want to feed fruit flies for the first few weeks, then go to pinheads. The babies are attraced to the red eyes on the Hydei fruit flies. I would say they are too young to change hands, but if you can provide a good setup and get them eating you you should be good. Hope this helps!

Thanks. Where can I get fruit flies? Also, do you mean like rubber containers about the size of a shoe box or larger? Thanks again.

Hi-

Yes they will work. You can get fruit flies at various pet shops and online. We buy from www.fruitflies.net. Hope this helps!
