Easier to acquire than to sell?

Passport May 02, 2004 09:03 AM

I have 3-4 pair of cornsnakes that I have decided not to keep. Nothing wrong with them I just want to change direction slightly. My question concerns the easiest and most successful method of selling them. I am running an ad in my local QuickQuarter and haven't even had one phone call. I am hesitant anyway to show them to just anyone as I keep other animals also and would like to keep a low profile in the neighborhood. I have a paypal account and thinking about listing them on the Kingsnake classified. Looking for comments and advice on pros and cons of selling. So far I have been a purchaser. But I am counting the cost of all the mice and want to focus more intently on my favorites. Just one more question....do you all like to receive the snakes in bags? or in large deli containers? I have received them both ways but I want to do this the right way if I ship them.

For the last two years I have sold the majority of my animals to bigger dealers, this is the first year since then I have decided to go back into dealing with the public in selling. I have always had good success selling here on kingsnake. It has the biggest herp market on the web and you get good replies from your ads. The problem is that there are now so many people selling on kingsnake that your ad gets buried in all the clutter, not to mention the rates have tripled in the last year or so for ads.
Also problems with non-payers and other retail issues can be a pain in the butt! If you are just selling a few snakes and do not plan on selling any others for the season then a newspaper ad or one of the free classified herps ads online might be a better way to go (if there are still free ads out there, I have not used them in years).
As far as shipping, I prefer the deli cups for smaller snakes, the add another level of protection, as long as you have them with a lot of packing substrate so they don’t get tossed around.
Good Luck
