It is cheaper to breed your own.Simply buy 4 females and 1 male put them in a 10 gallon aquarium with food and water and small critter bedding.I use pine shavings myself and let nature take its course.I myself have 20 colonys of mice and 10 pairs of rats to keep up with my snakes.John
I have a 3 drawer plastic rubbermaid thing I got from Wal-Mart, could I use that to breed mice? There is a 1/2" gap for air on each drawer.
Thanks
john
No, sorry that is not going to work. Mice will be able to squeeze out of a 1/2" gap and if there are any ridges on the inside of the tub, they would just chew their way out anyway.
If you really want to breed your own mice, go to the feeder forum. There is a ton of info over there about how to set up a colony.

My wife and a keep and breed respectable size collection of snakes. I have found that it is NOT worth the trouble to breed my own mice and rats. Rather, we buy frozen rodents in quantity.
After we did the math,(housing, feeding, cleaning, space required, time spent)we decided it is more productive to spend the time and resources on our reptile projects.
However, if you decide to raise your own, you may very well end up producing more than you need, and have some to sell or trade to others.
All the best,
Perry
I agree i use to breed my own rats and mice also.If you put in all the time and effort and smell it isnt worth it for me...Paul.
