From what I've witnessed from the Reptile rescue people in the Twin Cities area, you have to have the following
1) Love for Iguana's - because you will get a TON of them.
2) A LARGE building to house the animals
3) A rich uncle or a ton of money - because you will get a lot of animals in all sorts of conditions - mites, missing limbs, infections, dehydrated, etc. which will be in need of medical care, food, food and more food.
4) Patience, because it will drive you nuts to see how people treat herps as throw-away pets.

I commend you for wanting to get involved, but I would start out at a local animal shelter and volunteer to help with the herps. That would be the first place to start.

Check with the Kansas City Herp. Society adoption program. They do a lot of rescue and may have information. It could be that you could volunteer as a foster parent for neglected or abused animals!
I wish you lived closer, my best friends husband runs a nature center that is full of animals that were "set free" only to be picked up by Animal Control, or "donated" (dumped) to the nature center because the owner(s) got tired, or bored, or didn't realize the iguana would get 6ft long and meaner than mean when he reached sexual maturity, or that a beautiful parrot would get mean and psyco because his owner didn't realize that he was an intellegent animal and needed stimulation and interaction-- not just something pretty to look at once in a while, otherwise ignore! Or the risk of showering with a 12ft Retic! Sorry, I could go on and on.....

Oh well, My rant for Friday afternoon!!
