Copperheads in Kansas

Senior May 02, 2004 01:20 PM

Just last weekend I had the surprise of finding a copperhead (approximately 20 inches in length) along a small stream in the middle of the Kansas City suburbs. (Lenexa, KS near 83rd & Plfumm roads)

It was nice because my young sons were with me and we were looking for nature things like frogs etc. and i found the copperhead as I picked up a large rock. (carefully...lol)
We took some pictures and talked about not hurtingbothering snakes and then he went his way and we went ours.

Anyway, here is my question...
1) If I wanted to capturerelocate a copperhead is it legal in KS or do I just need something like a fishing license?
2) Is relocation typically fatal to copperheads? I've heard of this with other species.

I bring up these questions as I have neighbors that would kill them and if the choice is a dead copperhead or me catching and releasing it in the countryside...I'd prefer the latter. (Not that it is likely that the situation would ever occur.)

Thankyou in advance for your time. (I've been a lurking reader here for about 7 years)

Relocation shouldn't be a problem as long as they go into (very) simalar habitat.
I live in Kansas also. If you have to get rid of any let me know. I would be more then happy to make the drive for another copperhead.
