Getting My little one used to me.....

mom2autumnnreign May 02, 2004 02:51 PM

Any tips on getting my little one used to me....I just got her yesterday....so I realize she needs time to get used to her enclosure first...and all the day to day noise around my house...But I was wondering when and how should I go about getting her used to me?

when I got my first snake, it was a corn, i just let it be for a few days. Then I just started to handle her for short periods at a time.Like 10-15 minutes. The only way for then to get used to being handled and get used to you is to handle them. Mine are yearlings now and come out often to just set and watch what's going on. Mostly at dusk.

Let her settle in for a few days. Maybe even get one good feeding. Always give her 2 days of "no handling" after a meal.
Other than that, as already suggested, handle her gently for short periods of time. She will almost surely be very easy to handle very soon. It is hard with a new, first snake to give it the time it needs to settle in (and to let it be for 2-3 days after a meal), but these are good ideas. Duffy

OK, I will let her settle in....she doesnt need to feed till thurs....right now shes mostly just hiding under the olive branch thats in her enclosure...shes still pretty scared poor thing....I handled her before I bought her at the pet store...and she was a real sweetheart never once tried to bite....I havent really seen her go around her water bowl or anything...but everyone seems to say you hardly ever see them drink...btw, ive read so many different thing in books, websites etc.....She seems to stay in the middle between the warm and cool sides...what should the warm side max temp be for a hatchling???? some people said 80 some said warmer for young snakes....which is best?

Kristi,

80 is fine on the warm side. A little warmer is OK, too. The nice thing about a gradient is that your snake can find a spot where it is comfy, especially if it has hides in several locations. If feeding day is Thursday, maybe plan on doing some gentle handling on Sunday and daily or every other day after that until the next feeding. Don't worry...Sounds like your snake is settling in. Like I said, it will hide quite a bit.
Eventually it may start coming out as feeding day approaches and/or at dusk. Each snake is a little different. Duffy
