spastic veiled

chamsrcool May 02, 2004 05:08 PM

i just got a 16 week old veiled today.
i set up a ten gallon and so far the highest basking has gotten to is 88 the rest if the tank is about 70.
my first consurn is that when i mist the tank he will spasticly run around the cage and run into the walls close his eyes.
this lasts about 30 sec tehn he gathers his senses and climb back into the leaves.
my other consern is i have himm in a tank.. the smallest screen cage ihave is a 38 gallon reptarium.

what should i do about both situations?
also he hasn't eaten yet but he is very fat already.

16 weeks..thats to old to be in a glass tank. The repterium sould be just fine for him now. Also mist with warm water if your not already doing so.

I've never met a cham yet who likes being blasted directly by the jet of a spray bottle.

They'll run, hide, close their eyes.. anything they can do to get away. However, it's important that you wet them down, whether they like it or not.

If a cham is hurting I'll be a littel more delicate with them.. (a: heat the spreay water up so there's not a big temp difference. b: angle the spray so it falls down on him rather than directly at him)
But on a daily basis, I approach it like giving a kid their medicine.. Youre not gonna like it, but youre not gonna like it more if I don't do it.

The tank thingie.. I've never figured out the gallon sizes ont he reptarium, so excuse me for not being able to answer your question specifically.. Here's my theoretical answer:

I would take the reptarium over the tank. However, if the repterium is too massive you could have feeding issues on your hands. If possible, get a tweener-cage for him. (tube some hardware cloth over a plant.. with some pot saucers covering each end)

The 38 gal reptarium would be fine for a 16 week old veiled. That would mean your cham is about 4 months old. Veileds require a lot of ventilation with a basking area of 86-90*. Nighttime temps should be kept 65-68*. Veileds, like other lizards, do not understand the concept of glass. If you must keep it in the 10gal tank for any length of time, try wrapping the tank with something so he cannot see his own reflection.
Also, chams do not like changes. It may take a day or two for him to adjust to his new surroundings and start eating.. At this point, he probably still doesn't realize that your not a hungry predator.
