Lamp wattage

adiajsl May 02, 2004 08:32 PM

I have a three foot by three foot enclosure for my one for my two baby sulcatas( I am planning on making one bigger for them, but I am waiting for them to get bigger). I have a uvb lamp, ceramic heat emitter and a 60 watt basking bulb. I am afraid this is not high enough but the lamps I have now can only take 60 watts. I just bought a lamp that can use up to 150 watts, but I am sure that is too powerful. Should I use a 75 watt bulb or maybe higher? Thanks!

Something that specific is dependent on how far it is from the enclosure the temperature of the room etc. What I would recommend is getting several thermometers and placing it in various spots of the enclosure to ensure that you are getting a temperature gradient and one suitable for those specific types of tortoises.

Another thing you can do is use a higher wattage bulb, but put it on a lamp dimmer (about $11). That way, you can adjust the bulb up or down as needed, depending on your room temp. I have a 60 watt mercury vapor bulb for UVB, and then a 100 watt floodlight on a dimmer for additional heat. Most of the time the floodlight is at half power or less, but every once in a while it needs to be boosted up a bit.
