Want another beardie

gtphale May 02, 2004 08:44 PM

Well I want to get another Bearded dragon. I have a German Giant crossed with Orange female. She is about 8 months old now. I have her in a huge cage.

Well I have been wanting another dragon and thought about a male to match up with her. Not totally sure I would want to do the breeding thing or not yet. Would there be a problem rooming her up with a male? I would have two basking sites and plenty of food.

Or would a female be a better choice since I'm not sure about breeding but really want another dragon.

As for getting another cage that is not an option wife would kill me.lol

Well, she is a bit young to be putting a male in with her. Also, if your not sure about breeding, then just get her a female buddy. We don't want beardies turning into leopard geckos where the market is flooded, if it comes to that us breeders are out of a job! LOL

So two females would be just fine together? Shouldnt' be any fighting? Not sure if beardies are solo or live in groups in the wild.

Females usually get along but my understanding is that beardies also usually aren't social animals. I have one female that must be housed alone. I have another that pals up with everyone. She won't breed, but gets along great with everyone!!!

I agree w/ dmlove. Two females MIGHT get along fine. They also MIGHT fight and you will have to seperate them. The risk is there, so if you get another beardie you need to be fully prepared to put it in a seperate cage should they not get along.

Also, since your current beardie is not full grown, you would have to get a female that is and will stay the same size as her to house them together. This would be difficult. It would be better to wait until she is full grown so you can be sure the next one you got would match her in size before you put them together.

Finally and probably most importantly, anytime you bring a new lizard into your home you should quarantine it for 3 months, to be sure you aren't introducing any parasites or disease to your existing beardie. So you're gonna have to have a different enclosure for that anyways.

If your wife would kill you for 1 more cage, what's she going to say to a bunch baby cages and babies running around. Not a good idea.

Well if I were to start messing with Breeding it wouldn't be till afer June of 05 cause that is when we move into the new house. For the time being were in a one bedroom condo with very little room to spare. So the room is the main reason she would kill me.

I would not risk getting any other beardie unless you have a spare cage just in case. Females with often fight as well, and many get along. It is too risky. What are you going to do if they dont get along? Too risky, Dont do it unless you have another cage.

well there are 2 points i need to make, if your not sure about breeding don't get a male, and even if you were sure and wanted to breed you wouldn't be able to house them together all the time anyways. so getting a male means another enclosure, and sometimes even females don't live together very well, but my suggestion would be another female about the same age and size. just beware if they don't get along there could be problems with your wife and that 2nd enclosure down the road.

Thanks for the reply's everyone. I'm going to find myself a red sandfire female of the same size and give it a try. I also have a 40 gal breeder that i'll quarentine for a few months with. If any problems i'll have to seperate them and listen to the wifey.

Thanks again
