SERPENTBOY May 02, 2004 09:27 PM

HELLO TO ALL I HAVE SEEN SOMETHING WITH ONE OF MY CAL KINGS I HAVE NEVER SEEN B4... SHE IS AN EZY 5 FT VERY HEALTHY SNAKE..FULL OF EGGS.. SHE JUST WENT THRU HER PRE-EGG LAY SHED LAST NIGHT... I LOOKED IN THE BOX AN HOUR AGO AND SEEN ONE EGG REALLY DRIED UP NOT IN THE NEST BOX... COULD SHE BE EGGBOUND? OR IS THERE ANOTHER REASON WHY SHE WOULD JUST DROP ONE EGG AND NOT NE MORE..SHE HAS ATLEAST 15 IN HER ..... SHE IS STILL MOVING AROUND AND BEING VERY ALERT AND ACTIVE NOT SHOWING NE SIGNS OF DISTRESS.... I HAVE NEVER HAD AN EGGBOUND SNAKE OUT OF YRS OF BREEDING OFF AND ON... ANY INFO ASAP WOULD BE A BIG HELP ..THANX IN ADVANCE....MIKE....

It is unusual that she just shed last night and is already laying eggs, though not impossible. Give her another day and then re-evaluate the situation. You don't want to wait much longer than that. If you really think she's eggbound, a shot of oxytocin (or at least an examination)from your herp vet may be in order.
All the best,
Perry

I have seen a snake pass a slug several days before and several days after laying good eggs. Just make sure she has a good laying spot and leave her alone.

I also think you should leave her alone for now. I went through this same thing last week. I had a pueblan milk that laid a couple of slugs six days before she laid the rest of her good eggs. Your Cal king should be fine.

mike,

if she just had her pre-lay shed then nothing at all indicates that she's eggbound: females routinely seem to lay their bad eggs first, and early, and usually not in the laybox. What you want to hope for is that she doesn't lay a LOT of them (slugs) over the next 3-4 days, and that she holds off with most of them til 8 or 10 days after shedding, the odds are much higher that what waits that long to be laid will be good. Be patient, and good luck.
