How to tell the difference

PatrickR May 02, 2004 10:24 PM

I've been out of the "boa loop" for a while sad to say but I was at a LPS and saw that they had a tank of misc boas... most were common columbians no big deal but there is a gorgeous boa in there... and I would be intereted to figure out if its a surinam, puruvian, or guyanan... I lost the information in my brain to tell the difference...all of them in the tank are $120...this one is gorgeous.. it has BRICK red spots on its tail with PURE WHITE around it... in the middle of the tail on the said one of the patches is VERY RED and VERY long...can someone help me identify it without a pic... how to tell the difference...

I'm very interested in attaining a peruvian just for their beaty and attainable size as well, great snakes..

I might be able to get pics in 3 days if they dont sell it

thanx

it's very difficult to tell the difference between boa c. constrictors without counting the scales. chances are the boa was just a really nice bci (common boa). it's not very likely that a bcc accidentally got put in a tank with bci and sold for $120.

the other thing to remember about true red-tail localities is that they all belong to the same sub-species...and are highly variable...and many of those localities overlap (suriname and guyanna (sp)for instance).

good luck, chris

ok so how many scales are there for BCC and BCI??? I just doubt that this is a "common boa" its WAY to nice....and this places knows nothing, who knows this might be a diamond in a bunch of coal

When my son first pestered me about having a snake a few years ago, I knew absolutely nothing about snakes at all. We went to a local pet shop and I held a baby boa. It was beautiful-pink all over is what I remember most. I thought they all looked like that. I told the lady at the shop we'd think about it. The next day we decided to get it, but it was gone. The price was 100 dollars. At the very least it must have been a nice BCC.
