What's recomended for UV lighting?

mellordies May 02, 2004 11:37 PM

I used a T-Rex, worked well, but was very costly and didn't last very long. I used the 5.0 18 inch tube, but they don't put out very far lengths, now I'm using 100 watt powersun, one has lasted almost 5 months, the other only 3 months, but they are cheaper!!! The one that died early wasn't straight up and down like they recomend, so it could have been my fault!!! But I did just buy two more! Just wondering.

I am going to buy a mercury vapor bulb today perhaps... A lot of people are skeptical, but a '2 in 1' type light sounds appealing to me

I have heard mixed feelings about the UV flourescents (fl.) versus the mercury vapor (MV). I am not 100% sure about all of this, but I will repeat what I have read. They say the fl. (5.0 UVB) only put out about 10% of what the sun does. The MV supposedly are almost 100% (may be off a little). I also heard the MV should only be on for around 4-5 hours due to high radiation, which would mean you would need a secondary basking/heat source. I try to stay in the grey zone and use a fl. UVB 8.0 (the desert versions). I figure if the 5.0 puts off 10%, the 8.0 puts off significantly more, and Vito basks about 5-6 hours every day, and I have had no problems. Fattening up by the day and growing like a weed. Hope this helps.
