Giant Gecko?

Tarzana May 03, 2004 10:58 AM

Does anyone on this site own a New Caledonia Giant Gecko? I don't plan on trying to get one...but they seem to be very uncommon. Is it bacause of the price, or because they lay small clutches? I was just wondering and if someone has some time to answer this I would appreciate it. Thanks

THAT IS THE SKINNIEST LEACHIE I HAVE EVER SEEN. WHAT ARE YOU FEEDING THE POOR THING ?

I'm afraid your comment was out of order - Jackie who owns this leachie feeds him/her with very high quality foods, which includes the sandfire leachie food, plus fruit and babyfoods (he/she is not a fan of insects). This picture is not at the best angle which does give the impression that Dobby is a little on the slim side, but I can assure you the he/she is extremely healthy, growing like crazy (I should know I bought him from Hamm for her in September and he was about 1/2 the size and weight he is now)!

Hi Tarzana, Leachie breeders are quite rare to find in the UK (where I live) so, like Uroplatus has said she got mine for me from Germany. As I understand they are easier to find in the US. They are an excellent gecko to have and I would highly recommend getting one.

Incidentally that picture was taken a few months ago.

Thanks for the info, we'll give it a while, and if this isnt just a phase..I might think of looking a bit harder for a breeder.

If you knew anything about leachies, you would know that they are long and skinny when hanging on a branch and that young leachies are slim until they reach about 18 months old then they start filling out. I have quite a few breeding pairs and have raised many babies. That leachie (for its size/age) is nearly perfect weight.

This comment is so typical of many herpers today. Power feeding to get them grown up and breeding as quick as possible. This carries over to people keeping herps just as pets and think they need to feed them every day as much as they want or they are bad owners. How many obese leopard geckos are out there? Most people over feed their herps and it is pretty hard to under feed leachies (unless you just neglect them). Geckos are not supposes look like sausages that so many people think are healthy geckos. Alas, it is common in most every pet people keep. Dogs and cats are for the most part too fat. We "kill" them with kindness.

Regards,
John
