My golden Gecko Got really dark..is this bad?

StangNinja May 03, 2004 12:58 PM

Ok well my two golden geckos just got a habitat change...barley at all tho we just added some mossy type substrate.. thats about it lol..

Well anyways over last night he changed from what normal golden geckos look like to a darkish color...like darker brown... are they supposed to change colors like anoles and stuff or no..

The the mossy stuff resembles brownish color that he has changed to...

or does this mean he is sick?

Im really worried about him..It dont seem like they have been eating much... only a few meal worms...

Why do you add mossy substrate?
Not much is known about natural habitats of goldens, but most likely they are rock dwellers in areas which display reduced humidity in comparison to the neighbouring forests.
So not too moist and relatively dry-thats the way to go..ant not moss, which lifts up humidity levels

And Canada is all snow and ice, right?
No, Viet Nam is NOT just rainforest.
Holotypes as well as paratypes of G. ulikovskii were collected in semi dry rocky regions in the Gilai Contum region. The Habitats were close to rainforests, but never within them. The surrounding vegetation was savannah like and the rocks were sun exposed.
Not much more is known about the natural habitats of this species.
Importers obviously don´t care and are -if asked- not able to give more information on the origin of their animals.
Since G. ulikovskii is very closely related to G. petricolus and its distribution is only a few hundred kilometers eastward of those of G. petricolus, its quite likely that this species shows similar habits than the well known petricolus.

Hi, ive read your comments and find your probably the best chance i have at accurate helpfull information.

I have a male and female golden gecko( I can post images of the habitat if you deem usefull, please show me how.)
I used forest mix substrate, moss, a few rocks and plastic leafy plants. i provided hiding places in coconut-made shelters and i higher private ceramic-coconut nest where they seem to sleep in all day, together.

I understand that i might have been misguided; is too much moisture bad? Is there a better substrate? Should i provide more and bigger rocks.

you've stated there is little information on these geckos, nevertheless i would appreciate your opinion and comments(suggestions).

I also have difficulty feeding them, the crickets simply dig under the substrate and reappear when i clean the tank.

thanks

I agree with Tarentola:

Golden Geckos come from Vietnam rainforests, i(owner of 2 golden geckos) was advised to keep humidity high.
