About forums, this is something I just read.

-------"Folks,

I am fairly confident that I can already predict the outcome of this post, but I have decided to give everyone here the opportunity to prove me wrong!

In a NUTshell, I am having less and less fun on this board, and I am about ready to take my leave (although, less dramatically than my departure from another site ), unless matters change.

As it stands right now, I am very dismayed by the silence of the vast majority of posters, here, when others posters (old and new) are subjected to such mean-spirited and dishonest posts as another recent thread contains.

For too long I have watched, while new posters, who should be welcomed, are insulted and called flamers, only to leave the board and never come back!

For too long I have watched respected old posters stop posting (or post much more infrequently), due to the actions of a couple of idiots.

For too long I have watched formerly respected posters continue a dialogue with these same idiots.

The only conclusion that I can draw from these observations is that I am perceived in the same unflattering light as these other idiots are, and it is my own participation that needs to be cut short.

The future responses of many on this board will provide me with the guidance that I am seeking.-------------------------------

The funny part of this post is, its a board about a basketball team, nothing to do with monitors, my how similiar basketball boards are to monitors boards. By the way, I only lurk on that forum. I guess its a, people will be people thing. FR

I get the feeling that reality is simply too slow for the internet. No matter what you do, its old within minutes. FR

Your posts are just about the only ones I read, they are informative and entertaining, if you really think peoples are perceiving you as an idiot YOUR WRONG!
Most peoples I talked with envy you, some to the point of being jealously sick.
I enjoyed every moments we had and cherish them as good memories, and I take back what I said to you long ago. Take care of that rib!

Had me worried for a minute. It does seem like this forum sometimes though. I come here looking for answers and learning from experienced keepers. Mainly Fr, Robyn, Andrew, and Shvar. Only listed Shavar cuase I'm inlove with Sobeck lol

My animals and helping a friend out. Along with recent other events that are troubling with normal day to day life I have been posting less and less as well helping less with others. I try to log on once a day because you can either learn something new, or help someone else every day. Problems with this are that once you get into a pattern of helping others and frequently answering questions you get accused by a handful of idiots (names are different but they are all peanut gallery)of being someone who trys to twist info, spread lies, and make others look bad. Please, Im breeding bearded dragons in small amounts and the best info I found to help me was on monitor forums, whether it was substrate, moisture, basking temps, lizard biology, and finally when it came to what I dreaded and that was incubation, noone answers questions on incubation when someone wants to know ahead of time before eggs are layed. When my first eggs were layed I jumped through my butt all night building, setting up and equiping an incubator, Im glad I researched for a while ahead on that, as far as the perlite and how to use it and its moisture content, the best info came from you Frank (soak it, and grab handfulls let it drip and get rid of the excess pack it in the egg box, cant get any better of a description), but I ran into problems with moisture and air flow and fungus, but a very helpful individual at a reptile show a while back told me how to fix that and set up how many air holes and how big they need to be.
If someone were to ask questions about incubation before they had eggs physically in front of them, they get the typical answer of " why worry about it, you dont have eggs yet". I had to figure out through past research, and trial and error what worked and I lost a bunch of eggs, oh well I learned and know better now.
Personally this should be about the animals and helping others to not make the mistakes that some use have made in the past. There are those who refuse to believe, refuse to realize what they got into, and dont wanna hear the truth but youll always have impulse buyers and those that bought them because it seemed cool at the time.
I havent read through lately to see which post you referred to but I always enjoy reading your posts/responses and finding ever present helpful bits of info on a few forums. I dont participate much on other forums because of time constraints as well as the attitudes of some on another forum, the "arent you overstepping your boundry" types and those that just like to be insultive no matter where you post to certain people. I enjoy reading on occaision on V.net but I dont enjoy discussions with a few persistant hecklers there. That may be a reason why the traffic there is so slow, if your gonna get shot at by idiots why drive through that neighborhood?

We (varanus.net) are averaging 10,000, plus or minus a couple hundred, visits a month for the last year (and these people on average view 16 pages per visit)....not too bad. But does any of that matter about monitors???? I think the smaller sites have more to offer to the serious keeper, which ever site you prefer. I do know those that dislike our site are some of our best customers.

V.net sometimes may not have a post or response added sometimes for a few days maybe a bit more , but it fluctuates, so does another monitor forum or 2 I check out. What Im saying is that there is a good bit of info available if you read whats there, yet for someone who came from this forum who recently got a monitor or a few and is looking for advice on a subject other than specific reproduction questions unless you have one of a few names (Im not getting into names) you get told to "go ask that question at the Ksnake forum or one of a few others as we expect more from our monitors than that". I quoted this from several regulars in the past as a response to someone in need of answers to husbandry,or opinions etc. I noticed that questions on husbandry etc, opinions on husbandry etc, that werent to a certain par(or from a few people)were removed yet the degrading responses were many times left go. Im again not pointing fingers at anyone, its your forum and you do with it as you please, but when you read the requirements for posting on that forum it seems as if many subjects removed or questions removed do in fact belong there as they are about "captive bred monitors". I agree that its nice to have a civilized forum and exchange of info between people, Im all for it, I wish much of the juvenile crap here was removed ASAP because it belongs on an insult forum not here. Once in a blue moon theres always trolls and sharp tongued morons that are out for trouble and not to be decent. Its like the idea that if you open your doors to people only to wear a certain dress code, people on average act more civilized and expect more from themselves and their behavior than if they come in from the gravel pit (if you catch my idea, a bit on human behavior).
Personaly I enjoy visiting a few forums to read whats there when I have time because you can always learn something whether its about the animals or about people or to see a nice pic or 2, and to help others when I can or direct them to someone who can help them. Any way you look at it a forum is about people, the subject at hand is a way of expressing differences as well it shows some people just cant get along with many personalities, even when everyones behind their wall, the "good ole boy club" shows up alot of places. Oh I also like the "other reptiles" forum you have.
Its very often I see "I wont post or visit at V.net because those people dont allow newcomers or intermediates", yet I see many newcomers and intermediates that have been there from the begining.
How are the chuckwallas coming along, havent heard whether your still into them?

Jefe May 04, 2004 11:13 AM

Well you seemed to read part of the requirements for posting on that forum, "You may post messages concerning captive bred and captive breeding monitor lizards", but you forgot to add that this is also part of the guidelines (though it is very loosely enforced),"All are welcome to participate, though this forum is not intended for beginners. For entry level discussions, please visit The Monitor Forum at kingsnake.com."

The fact of the matter is we created a page that is different than kingsnakes and our intent is for it to be used in a different way. We believe you are best off using all of the forums not just Kingsnakes or ours.

Now if our site is so horrible then why are the ones that dislike it and "refuse to post" some of our best visitors? You may not like the personalities there, but again this is about monitors and information. Also if you look at the posts dates there are posts for everyday, so it is being used everyday (except May 3 which we had some techinical problems) by people who want to learn about monitors not talk about BS (like this).

As for the Chucks, my government (California State) would rather me collect them day in and day out (as there is only a daily limit on them) then captive breed them. Thats some good conservation techniques.

I agree there are guidlines and I like to read incubation info etc by FR on V.net and a few others, and a few other things, along with FRs pics.
I like the use of several forums as I noted if you were to put a few on levels Id put the one that starts with SS and ends with SS at the very entry of those who havent gotten a monitor or are trying to find out what they are, Ksnake at the beginning and intermediate with Vnl at intermediate (civilized there), then more consistant V.net at intermediate levels.

"You may not like the personalities there, but again this is about monitors and information." Yes, but its still a forum and people need to grow up and get along with others, for the most part it seems to have quieted down and has turned more civilized, at least some of those individuals have. Its nice to be able to talk like this on occaision between 2 civilized adults.

I helped a friend get 3 pairs of 4 (chucks)from another friend who bred 2 of those pairs himself then got out of the reptile industry (still owes me a few hundred bucks), and the last clutch of eggs was discovered too late in the sand. Currently Im on my way to see my hatching beardie eggs (Hypo orange pastel German giant x sandfire yellow gold, some big beardie eggs wow!! but then the males a huge animal at 21 inches and 600 grams.
Good luck with the chucks and let me know what happens either way, they are cool lizards.
