Good Husbandry?

skits May 03, 2004 03:45 PM

I just wanted to make sure i was keeping my two new baby cresteds the "right" way. Just wanted to get some advice if i was doing anything wrong. OK, so i have the two Kritter Keepers as you can see and a heat pad in between them so that each keeper is partially on the heat pad. Doing my best to make sure the temp stays between 75 and 80 during the day, and allowing it to drop to 70-68 (68 on COLD COLD nights) at night. I live in Charlotte, NC right now so humidity stays at 90 or so all day after one misting. The two seem to drink the water on the sides of the keepers. I havn't seen them eat the peaches baby food i mixed with a bit of calcium yet. I basically took the dish they came in and washed it out, then turned each upside down (so it creates a raised portion) and then put the baby food on top in a small amount. I'm planning on throwing in a small small cricket in each tonight. I can use any advice, these guys are so small i just want to keep them healthy. Thanks for the help and sorry for the long post, just wanted to make sure i was doing my job.

what kind of heat pad is that? Most reptile specific heat pads will get to usually around 100, some get up to 120. If it is a human heat pad, set it on low.

A vender, Doug Barr who was selling herpcages.com cages, suggested i get a thermologic heat pad. Its not getting above 80 in their cages, or hot enough to burn wood or melt plastic. The cages are sitting on the outside of the pad, so their not directly over the heat.

90% is too high, try spraying less, try to aim for 60-75%. Too high humidity leads to bacteria growth, my cresties shed perfectly with 60-75% humidity level. Best of luck with the new cresties.

Give your cresties some more branches to climb on and hide in. Baby cresties may not accept baby food right away, try some hand feeding sessions and see what happens. Cresties love crix, try putting 5 appropriate size crix/per gecko in the enclosure and wait in the morning to see if any are still there.

I'll keep that in mind, maybe lower the humidity level by waitin til humidity reads around those levels before a very light spray. I also cut a wrapping roll (rolls from wrapping paper, toiler paper, paper towels etc.) in half and proped it against the cage in the one that didn't have to many hides.

Doug Barr is actually the owner of Herpcages.com, not merely a vendor. He is the one who takes the orders, builds the cages, ships the cages, tests the cages, etc. I would assume that the heat pad you got from Doug is a Cobra, which is designed to operate cooler than other heat pads.

sorry, i wasn't to sure if he was the owner or not. Thanks for the info, actually its a thermotronics heat source. It works great, I just can't put the whole kritter keeper on top of it. But it keeps a constant 75-76 where i have them now. By the way, the two cresteds licked baby food off their lips tonight and tried a little off my finger. lol their still a little cautious of me i guess, only their second night. Thanks again for the help and info.

the thermotronics heat pads are very efficient heat pads....they are able to up the temperature almost 10 degrees ovr room temp no matter what the temps are. the are great for raising humidity or for under tank heating. the are avaliable at www.thermotronicsheatsource.com

It looks like your paper towels in the bottom are soaked. If you want to do that in a humid hide for them, okay, but doing it for the whole enclosure is asking for tremendous bacterial growth. Dry paper towels and one to two mistings a day ought to keep your humidity just fine.

sorry about that, i had just replaced the towels and i had just misted the keeper. By 24 hours the towels were dried out and humidity is at 60-70% right now. I'll make sure not to soak the keepers. Thanks for the advice.

Sounds like you're getting it all sorted out. Enjoy your cresties, they certainly are wonderful little guys.

Hey nice to hear your in the Charlotte area, yea theres a good vet in Matthews, i'll have to get the name again. A friend of mine took his corn to a vet, he said he was pretty good, i'll get the name and post it for you. Theres a couple of herp places, Last place on earth near the university area, and Pet depot, then of course Pet smart for basic stuff thats about it around here i think.

I don't know any good vets there, but I do know that http://www.arav.org/ is a great site for finding vets anywhere in the country. Click on the Directory link to see if there's one in your area.
