California land snails are they safe ?

boomerxx May 03, 2004 04:21 PM

I have a ten month old veil and was planning on feeding him some land snails . I was going to collect a few snails away from any possible pesticide land . I was then going to feed them some lettuce or other greens for 3 days and see if my veil would eat them. Will a veil eat the snail shell and all ? Has anyone tried this and what are my downsides if any ? I was told there was little chance of any parasites as long as they were not water snails. thanks.

Any wild collected food can have some parasites, but land snails should have less than the water snails. You can buy cultured land snails from Carolina Biological Supply that might be "cleaner". If you do collect them I'd feed them bone meal as well as leaf lettuce (not iceberg) and other dark greens. I would also select the younger snails as their shells will be a bit softer. Yes, they may eat them shells and all which is a good source of calcium. It might take a while before your cham figures out they are food. Some wc of larger species really like them. Others never show interest. Some chams really love slugs and pill bugs (rolly pollies) too.

My Jacksons loved them. Like the previous post said, pick the small ones. I just picked them of my plants and fed tehm to the chams by hand. They drop them alot because they are heavy and slimy. THey knew not to use their tongues. They just walked up, tilted their heads, and chomped down.
