Mercury Vapor Bulbs

uncg2005 May 03, 2004 04:30 PM

I wanted to see if anyone had tried the Mercury Vapor bulbs that Big Apple Herps site and any opinions on these compared flouresant uvb bulbs. I'm looking at this for the short term because until my baby bearded gets older im keeping him in a 20 gallon before moving him into a 55 and using the mercury bulb would allow me to use one light source on the smaller tank.

Well I don't use the ones that Big apple has but I use the solar brites from AAA reptiles that are wonderfully priced at $20 each. I have ornate uromastyx in 332 vision cages, they are the ones that you would have to cut out a section for a light strip and I hated to do that so I tried the solar brite mercury vapors and this past year they have all put on 20% more body weight and their breeding has been crazy this year plus over all I thihk they are more colorful and content. I know a lot of people say that mercury vapors don't put out half of what light strips uv puts out but I am going by what I am seeing with my animals. Hope this helps

I wouldn't use a MVB until you put him in the 55. Unless you use a smaller wattage, then you really can't get a good heat gradient. Besides, the MVB's that I've seen are more expensive than regular basking bulbs. I'm wanting to get into MVB's in the near future because I've heard very good things about them.
