OOOHHH DEAR!!! My Male has half his tail cut off

GEM May 03, 2004 06:16 PM

I am also looking for info on past postings but if someone knows right off hand what I can do please let me know. Unfortunately there are no docs in the area right now. Should I soak and put on an antiseptic ointment or let them take care of it. Female is sticking close to him. Last evening was a good night she laid her eggs, six in total and now the worst. Please HELP

i don't know much about losing tails except that they don't grow back in collared lizards. this website says some stuff about iguana tails. i don't know if that will help much or not but maybe it can get you started until someone with better news replies. poor baby, how did it happen?

Unfortunately due to my ignorance and the excitement of the new arrivals when I was done retrieving the eggs I did not put one of his rocks back properly and it slid when he got on it and jammed it between the rock and glass.

Just get him off the sand, and put some ointment on it. It will heal over just fine...no worries.

I had the exact same thing happen to one of mine last year. Bummed me out big time. I didn't realize his tail was trapped between two rocks. I reached in and pulled him out, and left the last 2" of his tail in the cage. I thought he just had a strong grip :P It healed fine, and caused no problems. He'll just never mate again. (just kidding).

One of the females I had also lost part of her tail. It heeled over just fine and she had no problems after that.

Don't know how it happened, but if it were me, until it can be seen, I would wash it good (provodine solution, or atleast warm soapy water.

Then apply antibiotic ointment , neosporin, whatever. Continue using it until healed. If any infection, call your Vet immediatley !

Hey I would also keep him on paper towels while treating it!

Hope he is okay, Let us know how he does!

Hi Eve: I have soaked it in salt water and then used polysporin. He's seems to be doing fine. Hopefully he will be fine. Zena is still staying close to him.
