Anacondas?

CrazyCodyKadunk May 03, 2004 07:35 PM

How long dose it take to tame a green anaconda? My girl seems to get more and more agressive with every handeling now she is biteing every thing trying to run away and hisses over and over agein. All the other snakes i have had have calmed down with handeling but not her. eny advice would be greatly apreshiated.

Many times anacondas will not tame down, but start with conditions. Make sure it has its temp and humidity perfect. Be gentle when you handle...a high stressed animal will be more agressive. Use gloves and let it crawl onto your hand instead of picking it up. Is the snake in a high traffic area, I have seen animals that flip outin high traffic. I just sold a ball python to a breeder because the person taking care of it had it in an area where it was being walked by constantly and it would strike multiple times at the glass and would hiss like a 20 foot retic. A BALL PYTHON! These snakes are work..keep trying.

Is it a wild caught or a captive bred? And I completely agree with eunectes4, make sure it's enclosure is up to anaconda habitats, let it slowly work it's way up to you when holding, and if there is a lot of traffic, make sure to cover the front or do something to just keep the snake happy.... What I did for a wild caught anaconda was I got her out ***SLOWLY*** and when he or she is out, I would keep a shirt out or blanket, and let her crawl into it, to make her feel secure... The first few times I wouldn't keep her out for a really long time, and try not to get her/him out anymore than one to two times a day... Another trick I have learned was that whenever using gloves (this is just something I do, it might not work, but who knows) is to find one kind of soap, and I would soak the gloves in water with the soap, until the smell of the soap is in the glove... Whenever she isn't quite as snappy after awhile, whenever you take the gloves off, wash your hands with the same soap, and the anaconda might be more prone to your scent... Overtime she will get used to you (I would hope, anacondas can be very... wishy-washy) I hope any of this helps!!! I wish you the best!

After all her conditions are being met, like the other post's said, it's kind've up to her. Since you stated that you keep other snakes I'm sure that you're handling her properly(no head grabs) so I would advise you to keep getting bit(lol) now while she's small. Doing this with the hope that she'll get bored biting you and get used to you. Keep in mind that some condas will remain aggressive no matter what you do.
Read Kelly's article in Jan. reptiles on greens.
Do you know her parents? If not you could be dealing with a w/c or very close to w/c conda.
just my opinion.
Good luck and keep us 'posted'
