chamsrcool May 03, 2004 08:06 PM

my baby veiled will open its mouth and sort of squek im not sure if this is its hiss or its having trouble breathing.

the breeder told me to measure the casque for its age but didn't say what that meant also he said the tarsul spurs might be visible.....i think he might have mistype on an e-mail saying they are 16 week instead of 6 weeks old or somthing becuase it is pretty small(svl 2 inche)

also the nostrol have a white type of stuff in them im not sure what this is...

I have never had any problems close to this in my jacksons>

Is this the same one you mentioned on your previous post? It doesn't sound like you actually bought it from a chameleon breeder. Read my previous reply to your other post.

the only thing wrong with the cham is that strange breathing thing now. it rarly does it during the day...id say once or twice

well there is thing about it mabe being a female

anyways what is a normal vet checkup price?
im gunna take it in an if there is some disease i'll have the guy pay the bill and give me my money back

If it is a male, you will definitely see the tarsal spurs. Like I stated earlier, they can be seen as soon as the hatchling emerges from the egg. Now for the vet prices, that can vary somewhat. They start at about $25 . I'd bring a fecal sample with you just to be sure everything is okay with that.
Now, for the wheezing part, hopefully you have your cham in a screen cage and not glass. Increase the heat so she has a basking spot of at least 85-90*. It should be in the 70's on the bottom part of the cage. Nighttime lows should be no lower than 65-68*. Please use a thermometer. Don't guess at temps.
Hope this helps,
Cricket

To help rule out URI a few other things to consider. If the cham squeaks when threatening and gaping at you it may just be a hiss. If the cham is gulping, puffing out its gular pouch over and over, sitting dark and still for a long time in the basking area with its head tipped straight up and spending most of the time with its mouth open it is most likely URI. A cham who has been basking for a while, is warmed up and ready to cool off a bit will sometimes gape, but it should stop once it moves out of the heat. A sick cham will not be eating or drinking either.
