Vacation - Care for Ball Pythons While Away?

dangerously May 03, 2004 09:17 PM

My friend that used to take care of my ball pythons while I was on vacation has moved away, and I haven't been able to find anyone willing to take care of my bp's (at least no one I trust with a housekey) while I go away for a week. I'm not going right away, so it's not an emergency, but I'd like to know what others do for their bp's while they're away. I'm sure the snakes would be ok for a week, but I'd like to at least get them fresh water a few times. Has anyone run into this type situation? Any hints or tips for me?

BP's will be fine with a water change 1x per week, as long as they don't defecate in it, and you don't keep it at the hot spot, wich will grow high levels bacteria and/or evaporate in a week. If your worried, just put an extra waterbowl that can't be tipped over by the snake, and make sure you change both before you leave, and they'll be fine.

I went away on vacation one time, and had a snake fall ill while I was gone. I had someone comming in to check on them and fill water dishes, but this person knew little to nothing about snakes, and had no idea that there was anything wrong. That poor snake suffered for quite a while, and died several days after I got home. While I can't lay blame, I felt and still feel like a jerk for alowing this to happen to my snake. I feel a whole lot better if I have someone with some knowledge of snakes, who is not afraid to pick them up and take them to the vet if need be.
