Dark northern water snake

they almost all look that that in one marsh i know on lake erie. everyone i have seen over 2 feet is almost jet black. Funny, a few miles away at a spot on a river i see adults with very prominant bands.

Growing up in NE Iowa, all the Northern waters we found had prodominant squarish bronze bands on a light gray background color. Occasionally we'd come a cross a more obscurely colored one, but for the most part, very well patterned.
