pinheads vs. fruitflies...

ginevive Jun 16, 2003 06:30 AM

My wood frogs are about to morph into frogs, and they will each be smaller than a dime. I am thinking of either ordering pinhead crickets, or buying flightless fruitflies from a nearby shop that specializes in dartfrogs (Aarons frog farm.) Any suggestions? The least amount of crix that I found to buy online was 500, and I really don't need that many for 4 wood frogs. Anyone know of an online store that sells pinheads in a smaller amount? Also, what is a reputable online crix store, so I don't get ripped off? Thank you.

You should get both. Fruit flies are not good to feed alone, and the pinheads die out easily. So you will need fruit flies to hold you over until you can get more pinheads. 500 seems like it is a lot, but it's NOT. I currently order 2000 pinheads to feed nine dart frogs, and they either get eaten or die off very quickly.

Hi Ginevive,

Aaron is a really cool guy. I bought a few tincs from him about a year ago so deffinetly stop by his place for not only the fruit flies but also to have a look around. I've been ordering crickets from a place called Salph's Cricket Ranch for over 5 years now, their number is 1-800-238-7322 I think the smallest quantity that they will ship is 500 but honestly 500 pin-heads will go fast. The little wood frogs might be able to take 1/16 inch crickets and the 1/16 crickets usually do better during shipping so you don't loose any.

Besides fruit flies and crickets you might also want to go out and collect piles of leaf compost that are full of tiny springtails and other invertabrates. You can either place chunks of leaf compost directly into the cage or you can put the leaf compost into a sifter, put the sifter over a small container, place a lightbulb over the leaves that are in the sifter and most of the tiny insects will crawl out of the bottom of the sifter to escape the heat. You can then feed these little bugs to your frogs. Keep us updated about how they are doing, good luck

your much better w/ ff`s. they produce a lot more for your money. you dont get them all at once and you dont have to feed ff`s. you can trap the ones that get out w/ vinegar wine or beer
