Male-female anole fight

ginza May 04, 2004 05:53 AM

Hi all,
I have 3 anoles, 2 of them are supposed to be females, 1 male. Since last week, a female one (bought as female at least) is the boss in the terrarium, and tries to bite and harm the male.

The story starts 3 months ago, when i bought a couple of anoles, Female A and Male A. With them together everything was ok, the male was almost always green, showing its delap periodically and trying to copulate with female A.

1 month ago, since the female A did not accept to copulate with male A, i bought another female, the female B, and put them 3 in the terrarium.

At the beginning the female A behave in an aggressive way with female B, but after a week, everything calm down.

Last week something weird started to happen. Now the male A and the femlae B are brown and the female A is green. What is more shocking to me is that the female A is fighting (beating, harrassing) the male A.

Is my female A a male? or it is just an unsocial anole?

Thanks!!!

Sounds like a male to me. Two simple ways to tell male/female green anoles apart are that males have a big brightly red(sometimes a little orange) colored delap(throat pouch)under their necks. Female green anoles have a fine white line down their backs which males don't have.

I have been keeping anoles since I have about 10 years old. I am 30 now and NEVER have I seen two females aggressive toward each other. Male anoles will definately fight all the time if the enclosure is not big enough to house them. They are a very territorial lizard and use throat display's to ward off other male anoles and to attract female anoles.
