I would not use aspen. I use right now a dirt mulch and leaf litter mix for my rudi's.

The dirt I use is from my yard, the mulch i use is cypress mulch purchased at wal mart, the leaf litter is also from my yard i go out and rake them up.
I do not know of a place to go buy this mix. Maybe a nursery might sell you dirt and leafs?
