I know that they aren't legal in the US and that they aren't protected by CITES so why don't European garters show up in Canada?? Is there any legislation here that I'm not aware of?
Thank You

I know of a gentleman in Europe who has a few SF garters. I have asked about their status over there and he has told me that there seem to be severe imbreeding problems over there. Apparently all of the Garters they have there came from a limited number of parents and the genes are being exhausted. It is quite a shame that such a beautiful snake is so threatened. I might suggest a closely related snake T. s. infernalis- The California Red Sided Garter snake. These snakes are gorgeous specimens that look almost exactly like the SF garter. They are completely legal as well. The major difference between the CRSG and the SF garter is that the CRSG does not have a complete red stripe on either side of the dorsal Green/blue/white. They are still beautiful. contact me if interested I know a guy who may have some later this year.
sorry email me back for infernalis information
