Dehydrating Chuck... I need a little help please

wlinville May 04, 2004 12:52 PM

I got 3 baby chucks about a week ago. 2 of them are doing great, the other seems to be lazyer (if thats possable). That one is also dehydrating, as seen in the picture. I have been giving it water by dropper, but I cant do that forever. The cage has a basking spot, and I just added a bowl of water today. I feed them every morning, and have been putting extra water on their food.

Also any suggestions for tamming baby DIs? I have 2 juv's that are very high strung. I assume they are all like this, but what can I do so they grow out of it?

Thanks,
Ben

Get a long shallow tub or pan and add about an inch of warm water. Watch him in the water as he may want to fall asleep (drown) or try to escape. See if he'll eat any grapes or other fruit that has high water content. Melon is good too. Strawberry......... etc....

Has he passed any stool yet? Is he alert?

He didnt make it. I was even hand watering him, which he was fine with. I came in today and found him dead on the basking spot. He was not dehydrated even close enough to have died from it, so I am guessing stress. He was not as active as the other two from the start. Thats really too bad as he was very beautiful.

Very sad, hope the other 2 make it!

Are they wc's ? It's tough to get them acclimated. Give Tom Greb or dvl a holler and ask for some advice.

As far as your desert iggies, takes time, plenty of it, with attempts at handling daily. Some are more mellow than others.

Patience and then some is the only way. I got my girl she had never been handled and what a flip out .

Now after almost 2 years shes settled down and can be picked up.

It is hard to say why some die. There may have been another problem that you weren't aware of.
