Correctly or something in the ballpark of near correct, most monitors dont live long in captivity because of improper husbandry and dehydration lack of immune system etc. Most records in captivity for species of monitor as far as longevity are still alive many years after the books are published if kept somewhat correctly (15-30?? years). Many species of monitor can reproduce as early as 6 months old.
Large monitors breed at a very young age(well under two years) if cared for properly. Medium sized monitors, like argus, can breed in a year.
I have ackies from 1991, they bred young and multiclutched and are some are still alive. Lord knows I didn't always take good care of them.
I would think a normal functional lifespan of a small monitor is over 7 years. functional means not a shriviled old thing with its heart beating. By the way, 7 years is way past the attention span of most people. cheers FR
