Humidity Problems

tdaugh04 May 04, 2004 01:23 PM

I can't get the humidity past 72. The cage is a 20 gallon glass tank that is 2' high, 2' long, and about 1.5' wide. I've been using a fogger and misting by hand whenever i'm around. I've tried covering the screen top with a wet towel, and again with foil, but these just keep the humidity at a constant 70%. I'm thinking that maybe the substrate isn't getting hot enough to release moisture. The temp. in the day is between 82 and 89 using lamps. Do you guys think i need a heatpad to heat the substrate?

There are a few reasons your humidity could be low. Towels absorb moisture so you are not keeping it in the cage, try plastic and leave small space on the side for ventalation. Many heat sources like ceramic heat emiters will also kill your himidity. I use all undertank heat and that works well, I would switch if I were you. Now foggers are awesome for increasing humidity and you should not have any problems in a 20 gallon tank so your humidity guage might actually be broken...it happens quite often. My BEST I have used are the long oval combinations for less the 2$ at menards...good luck.

Acurite*
Indoor/Outdoor
Min/Max
Clock
Get`em at WalMart for $16
Repti Flo 250 pumps work better then any mister/fogger on the market. Try Pets Mart $12
Both of these work well in my 75 gal tank
Screen tops are duct taped off(except for 4"X 2'vents across the back)
Plexi-Glass top coming soon

Good Luck. . . . . .
